In Australia, a variety of brick sizes are available to be used for different construction purposes.
If you’re in the construction industry or you are tackling your own home project, it’s important to know the standard brick dimensions in order to have an accurate inventory for your project.
Here, we explain the standard brick dimensions in Australia, as well as a few exceptions to this standard.
In Australia, the standard dimensions for bricks are 76mm high x 230mm long x 110mm wide.
While bricks are available in an array of shapes and sizes, this standard sizing is widely used in construction projects due to its affordability and ease of use. These standard dimensions allow for bricks to be laid quickly and easily without the need for specialised tools or equipment. In addition, standard bricks are compatible with a range of other building materials, making them an ideal choice for various applications.
It is important to note that when it comes to standard brick dimensions, not every brick you find will have exactly the same sizing due to variances in the manufacturing process. However, in the majority of cases the size differences will not be noticeable and have little impact on the finished product.
Apart from standard bricks, here are a few other types of bricks which do not use these standard dimensions.
Internal wall bricks are generally larger than standard sized bricks due to the fact that they require less time and labour to lay and build the walls. Internal wall bricks are typically 162mm high x 305mm long x 90mm wide. This allows for quicker construction of internal walls as fewer bricks are required. In addition, the reduced number of joints between bricks helps to improve the strength and stability of the wall.
Double height or two course bricks are twice the height of a standard brick. These bricks are typically used for garden walls, boundary walls and other low-rise construction. The dimensions of these bricks are 38mm high x 230mm long x 110mm wide.
Using bricks of this size can help reduce building costs and cut down build-time, as fewer bricks are required to complete the job. In addition, double height bricks can be used to create a more decorative finish on walls, as they can be laid in patterns or designs.
