Sustainable Bricks: 5 Reasons Why Brickwork is Eco-Friendly

Brickwork has been used in the construction industry for thousands of years, and still plays an important role in the construction of modern buildings. With an increased public focus on environmentally-friendly construction solutions, bricks are an excellent eco-friendly material for builders to work with. Here, we list five key reasons why sustainable bricks are a great eco-friendly choice to use in your next construction project.

Bricks Are Made From Natural Materials.

Bricks are primarily made from clay, which is one of the most abundant natural materials on earth and can be sustainably sourced.

During the manufacturing process, bricks are fired in kilns that reach high temperatures. This firing process makes bricks more thermally efficient, meaning that they are able to absorb and retain heat better than other materials. As a result, brick buildings stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, resulting in lower energy bills for both homeowners and businesses.

Bricks Are Durable and Require Little Maintenance

Bricks are known for their durability, and can last for centuries with the right care and maintenance.

This longevity means that bricks have a much lower environmental impact than other building materials that need to be replaced more frequently. In fact, research has shown that the embodied energy (i.e. the energy consumed by all of the processes associated with the production of a building material) of bricks is just a fraction of that of other common construction materials like concrete and steel.

Sustainable bricks also require very little maintenance, helping save waste and labour time.

Bricks Are Recyclable and Can Be Reused

When bricks reach the end of their life, they can either be reused or recycled. Reusing bricks is often the preferred option, as it prolongs their lifespan and reduces the need for new materials. Bricks can typically be reused multiple times, provided that they are properly cleaned and repaired.

If bricks are too damaged to be reused, they can also be recycled and used for various applications such as road construction or landscaping.

In addition, many brick recyclers create new bricks from recycled materials, which is an effective way to reduce landfill waste and conserve natural resources.

Brick Buildings Are Energy Efficient

Brick walls have a high thermal mass, which means that they absorb and store heat well. In the winter, this stored heat releases slowly, helping to keep the building warm. In the summer, the thick walls help to keep the building cool by blocking out the sun’s rays.

As a result, brick buildings stay comfortable year-round without needing to rely heavily on artificial heating and cooling. This makes them more eco-friendly than other construction materials, helping reduce the building’s carbon footprint.

They are a perfect material for the harsh Australian climate!

Bricks Don’t Require Chemicals To Maintain Their Aesthetic

Bricks are a popular choice for both exterior and interior surfaces because of their durability and timeless aesthetic. Unlike other common building materials, bricks don’t require regular treatments with chemicals to maintain their beauty.

Instead, they can be cleaned with soap and water. In addition, bricks are fire-resistant and easy to repair if they are damaged.
